The Ritual

Cutting and lighting

Two technical steps, but above all two moments of the same ritual.

The cut

The cut must open the passage of smoke without compromising the part that holds the band together. The principle is simple: cut less than your instinct suggests. Just remove the cover of the head of the cigar, which I often summarize in a very simple formula: just the cap.

To get started, a double blade guillotine is the cleanest and most versatile choice. If when you look at the cigar it feels like you're cutting very little, you're probably close to the right size.

Roasting

Bring the flame close to the foot without immersing it directly. Rotate the cigar and let the heat gradually prepare the surface.

The ignition

After toasting, bring the cigar to your mouth, continue to rotate it and inhale calmly while keeping the flame at a short distance. Check the embers by blowing gently on your foot.

When you think you're cutting too little, you're still cutting too much.

The first puffs

Start slowly. An aggressive start overheats the tobacco just when it should begin to express itself. The calm, here, is already technical.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the cigar be cut?

Only the minimum portion of the head needed to open the passage of smoke should be removed, leaving the part that holds the band together intact. In other words: just the cap.

Which is better guillotine, V-Cut or punch?

To get started, a double-bladed guillotine is the most versatile choice. V-Cut and punch change the shape and concentration of the draw and are better suited to specific preferences.

Does the flame have to touch the cigar?

During roasting it is preferable to bring the heat closer without immersing your foot in the flame. The cigar must be rotated to prepare a uniform ember.

How do I check if the cigar is lit properly?

Gently blow on the foot: the surface should light up fairly evenly. Any dark areas can be corrected with a short targeted intervention.
