InterTabac 2026 closed in Dortmund on 17 September after three trade-only days. The fair placed manufacturers, distributors, retailers and associations in the same rooms; around it, the Cigar Culture Summit and the awards ceremonies offered two ways to read the week: the future of the market and the way consumers now choose cigars and places.
A fair about product, but also distribution
InterTabac’s official press material presented the 2026 edition as an international meeting of around 750 exhibitors from 64 countries. Access was reserved for trade visitors: not a consumer fair, but a place where demand becomes assortment, distribution and commercial relationships.
That distance from a simple launch is what makes the show useful to watch. A product reaches the counter only after decisions about markets, pricing, supply, regulation and service. The 2026 programme made those decisions visible without separating them from cigar culture.
The Cigar Culture Summit opened the week
On 14 September, the Cigar Culture Summit brought together manufacturers, distributors, specialist retailers and media in three streams: emerging markets and international entry; innovation and quality leadership in premium cigars; and the future of specialist retail in the DACH region. The announced topics included lounges and hotels, regulation, social media, distribution and changing buying habits.
The summit worked as a lens before it worked as a conference schedule. Cigars were not discussed only as goods to order, but as a category that must defend its value while sales channels and the European fiscal environment change.
Cigar Trophy 2026: consumers have their say
On 15 September, Cigar Journal announced the results of the 2026 Cigar Trophy, a public award built from reader nominations and a final vote among five nominees in each category. It matters to name it accurately: this is a consumer award, not a blind tasting and not an InterTabac prize.

Lounges and special recognitions
The results page carries a section titled Best Lounge 2025, even though it was published on 15 September 2026. We keep the official wording rather than silently correcting it: Europe, The House of Grauer (Geneva); Asia, Vintage Cigar Lounge (Dubai); Americas, Cigar Country (Punta Cana) and Davidoff Madison (New York); South America, The Cigar Humidor (Bogotá).
Other recognitions went to Celina Turrent Cabada for Outstanding Art, Procigar for Charity & Community, Jemma Freeman as Ambassador, DH. Signature for Sustainability and Jorge Padrón for Lifetime Achievement.
The Alternative Awards and the line we should not cross
On 16 September, InterTabac hosted the World Alternative Awards, dedicated to alternative and reduced-risk products. The official 2026 programme confirms ten awards across four areas: Pouch Products; Vape & Vapor Solutions; Next Generation & Reduced Risk Products; and Brand & Market Impact.
At the time of publication, the official 2026 page confirms the ceremony, categories and jury, but does not yet publish a complete list of 2026 winners. The winner list shown on the same page belongs to 2025; we do not present it as the result of the fair that has just ended.
Why this week matters
InterTabac showed a market moving on several levels at once: premium cigars are seeking new markets and new forms of hospitality; specialist retail is dealing with regulation and fiscal pressure; and the public continues to reward not only cigars, but also the places, tools, culture and people that give them context.
The fair measures what the market displays. Awards tell us what people remember.
The desk’s reading
Dortmund’s most interesting result is not one product launch. It is the link between the supply chain, hospitality and storytelling: cigars remain central, but their value increasingly depends on the quality of the experience and the precision of the way it is presented. The next edition is already announced for 14–16 September 2027; this week’s review begins with the names and categories that received real attention.
